Window Glass Replacement

Energy-efficient window glass replacement for a family home in Gresham. Upgraded to dual-pane insulated glass for better comfort and lower energy bills.

Project Overview

A homeowner in Gresham's Rockwood neighborhood contacted Clear Works Glass about replacing the glass in several living room windows. The existing single-pane windows were original to the 1970s home and caused high heating bills during Oregon winters. The homeowner wanted to improve energy efficiency without the expense of replacing the entire window frames.

We replaced the old single-pane glass with modern dual-pane insulated glass units in the existing vinyl window frames. The new insulated glass provides significantly better thermal performance, reducing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. The project included three large picture windows and two smaller casement windows, all completed in one day.

The Problem

The home's living room windows had original single-pane glass from the 1970s, which provided minimal insulation. The homeowner noticed cold drafts near the windows during winter and high heating bills. Condensation formed on the inside of the windows during cold weather, sometimes causing water damage to the window sills and surrounding walls.

The homeowner had received quotes for complete window replacement, but the cost was prohibitive. They needed a more affordable solution that would improve energy efficiency without requiring new window frames. The existing vinyl frames were in good condition and could accommodate thicker insulated glass units with minor modifications.

Challenges

Single-pane glass from 1970s
High heating bills
Cold drafts and condensation
Budget constraints
Existing frames in good condition
Need for energy efficiency improvement

Our Solution

Clear Works Glass visited the Gresham home to measure the existing windows and assess the vinyl frames. We confirmed that the frames could accommodate dual-pane insulated glass units with minor adjustments to the glazing channels. We recommended standard dual-pane glass with argon gas fill, which provides excellent insulation at a reasonable cost.

We custom-ordered the insulated glass units to fit the existing window openings precisely. Installation took one full day and included carefully removing the old single-pane glass, modifying the glazing channels as needed, and installing the new dual-pane units with fresh weatherstripping and sealant. We worked room by room to minimize disruption to the family's daily routine.

The homeowner immediately noticed the difference in comfort. The living room felt warmer in the evenings, and the cold drafts near the windows were eliminated. Condensation on the windows stopped completely. The homeowner expects to see significant savings on heating bills over the coming winter. We provided a warranty on both the glass and installation, giving the homeowner peace of mind about their investment.

Materials Used

We installed dual-pane insulated glass units with argon gas fill between the panes. Argon is a dense, inert gas that provides better insulation than air, reducing heat transfer through the windows. The glass panes are separated by a spacer bar that maintains the proper gap and contains desiccant to prevent condensation between the panes.

Each insulated glass unit was custom-fabricated to fit the existing window openings. We used fresh glazing compound and weatherstripping to ensure airtight seals around the glass perimeter. The installation meets Oregon energy efficiency standards and qualifies for potential energy tax credits.
